Wall Unit
|
Our client had
just acquired a townhouse and called us in for some ideas. During our visit, we discovered that the wall above and behind the fireplace
was hollow, and if opened up, could house a new wall unit. They agreed and
we're now pleased to present a few before, during and after photos. |

The
Original Fireplace and Wall
Note how the wall above and to the left of the fire
place juts out approximately two feet from the rest of the room. This was built this way by the developer to allow for the installation of the original fireplace,
as well as accommodating a number of utilities, such as gas, electric and
water pipes that run up and down the three stories.

The Vision
Using a Computer Aided Design program, and working
closely with our client, we began designing a new custom wall
unit utilizing the previously hidden and unused space. The program allowed
us to try out multiple design variations, view each one in 3D, and
incorporate client feedback, before reaching the final design.

Work In
Progress
After cutting a few exploratory holes in the
drywall, we were able to better determine which space could be feasibly
recaptured. During our probes, we found that by relocating a pipe, we
would be able to further increase the
amount of recaptured space. The client agreed, the design was quickly
modified, and construction proceeded. Towards the end of the construction
phase, new drywall was installed and painted, setting
the stage for the fabrication of the new wall unit.

The
Finished Product - A New Wall Unit
In less than three weeks from the initial call, the
project was designed and completed, much to the delight of the client.

We cut the shelves from oak, which we then naturally stained
and finished to a
high polish. The grain really shows through and complements the client's
hardwood floors.
The top two shelves are deep enough to generously accommodate
a row of books, as well as other treasured display items.
The TV stand was designed to safely hold a 250 lb.,
36" television set, easily pulls out a full 14", and rotates
360 degrees, enabling television viewing from the living room, dining room
and kitchen.
The five smaller shelves to the right of the TV also
follow the curved contours of the larger shelves,
and have more than enough space to hold hundreds of CD's and DVD's.
The three quarter circle shelves to the right of the
fireplace will soon house the client's multimedia, home theater, and audio
equipment. To assist in hiding the clutter from wires, we built in a
hidden "wire highway" that runs behind the fireplace. If you
look closely, you can see three circular holes towards the
back left side wall adjacent to the three lower shelves. These provide
access to a two inch plastic pipe network that will enable the client to
run their wiring between components. All power plugs will also be hidden,
as the equipment can draw electricity from the eight integrated electrical
outlets hidden behind the television stand,
which were also installed as part of this project.

The Wall
Unit Becomes A Part Of Their Lives
Slowly, the client has begun to unpack and fill the
new wall unit. In time, we hope to bring you a picture of the Wall Unit
once the client has had a chance to fully unpack and settle into their new
home.
